The Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Contributory Pension Scheme Sector (NUPCPS), has accused several Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs) of negligence and deliberate delays in the disbursement of approved pension increases to retirees of Federal Government–funded ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).
In a petition dated December 15, 2025, and addressed to the Director-General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), the union said it has received “myriads of complaints” from retirees across the country over what it described as “inhuman maltreatment” by PFAs handling the payment process.
The letter was signed by the National Chairman of NUPCPS, Comrade Sylvanus C. Nwaiwu, and the National Secretary, Comrade Bisan Olufemi John.
While commending PenCom for what it called “evidential transformational giant strides” in the pension industry, the union said some PFAs were undermining the commission’s efforts.
“We are disappointed by the bitter experiences and numerous complaints received from our members across the nation arising from the activities of the Pension Fund Administrators who are determined to sabotage the good intentions of the Commission,” the union stated.
The NUPCPS specifically named Leadway Pensure, Premium Pensions, IBTC Pensions, FCMB Pensions and Trustfund Pensions, alleging that they were imposing additional conditions on retirees under the Life Annuity programme before releasing approved payments.
According to the union, affected retirees are being compelled to first execute agreements with annuity providers before receiving their lump sums, and even after complying, are asked to wait “two to three weeks, with some told to return as late as January 29, 2026.”
“These are elderly men and women old enough to be fathers and mothers to the chief executives of these PFAs,” the statement said.
The union also alleged that some retirees who had received payments were short-paid.
“A number of our members who have been paid were paid amounts short of the 50 per cent concessionary lump sum approved by the Commission. We are compiling the names of those short-paid to ensure justice for them,” it added.
Following an emergency meeting held in Abuja on Monday, December 15, the union announced a series of resolutions, including the possibility of a nationwide protest.
“The union resolved to call out all members for a total nationwide protest if the PFAs fail to pay every member latest by December 24, 2025,” the statement read.
It further warned that retirees could occupy the headquarters of defaulting PFAs until payments are made.
Appealing to PenCom to intervene urgently, the union called on the Director-General to compel PFAs to act swiftly.
“We strongly appeal to the Director-General to call the PFAs to order and ensure immediate fast-tracking of disbursements or direct credits to beneficiaries’ bank accounts, if the planned nationwide protest must not hold,” the union said.
