The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Gombe State Council, has commended Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya for securing regulatory autonomy for the state’s electricity market, describing the development as a historic milestone.
The union gave the commendation in a statement issued on Sunday and signed by its Chairman, Faruk Muazu Gombe.
According to the NUJ, the transfer of regulatory oversight from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to the Gombe State Electricity Regulatory Commission (GOSERC) represents a major step toward energy independence and economic growth for the state.
“This historic development marks a transformative milestone in Gombe State’s journey toward energy independence and economic empowerment,” the statement said.
The NUJ praised the governor’s leadership, noting that the achievement was made possible through compliance with constitutional provisions and the Electricity Act 2023, as well as sustained engagement with federal authorities.
“The Governor’s visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to harnessing the opportunities presented by the amended Constitution and the Electricity Act 2023 have placed Gombe among forward-thinking states taking charge of their intrastate electricity markets,” the union stated.
It noted that the reform would enable the state to design electricity tariffs that reflect local realities, attract private sector investment, and improve access to reliable power for households, businesses, and industries.
“This bold step not only decentralizes power sector governance but also positions Gombe to accelerate access to reliable electricity and stimulate inclusive economic growth,” the NUJ said.
The journalists’ body also described the establishment of GOSERC and the planned incorporation of the Jos Electricity Distribution (JED) SubCo as indicators of a new era of improved service delivery and tailored regulation in the power sector.
The NUJ pledged its support for the state government during the transition and called on stakeholders to work together to ensure the success of the reform.
“We urge all stakeholders, both public and private, to collaborate in ensuring the success of this reform, while calling on GOSERC to uphold the highest standards of transparency, professionalism, and regulatory independence,” the statement added.
The union reaffirmed its commitment to public enlightenment and accountability as the state embarks on what it described as a promising new chapter in its energy sector.
“As journalists, we remain committed to informing the public, fostering accountability, and amplifying the voices of citizens throughout this transition,” the NUJ said.
