Senegal have emerged champions of the Africa Cup of Nations after a dramatic and controversial final victory over host nation Morocco, in a match that combined tactical caution, raw emotion, officiating disputes, and late-game drama that will be debated for years.

Played before a vociferous home crowd, the final lived up to its billing as a clash of two African heavyweights. While both teams approached the contest with discipline and restraint, it was Senegal who showed greater ambition, mental strength, and composure — even amid chaos.

A Gruelling, Tactical Chess Match
From kickoff, the final unfolded as a tense tactical battle rather than a free-flowing spectacle. Morocco, buoyed by home support, sought to dominate possession and patiently probe Senegal’s compact defensive shape. Senegal, on the other hand, remained organised, absorbing pressure while launching calculated counter-attacks.

Clear chances were rare. Both teams defended deep, pressed selectively, and avoided unnecessary risks. The first half ended goalless, and the second followed a similar pattern — intense, physical, and finely balanced.

Despite playing on Moroccan soil, Senegal appeared unfazed by the hostile atmosphere, maintaining discipline and showing greater attacking intent as the match wore on.

Late Controversy Sparks Chaos

The defining moment of the final came deep into stoppage time.
In the 92nd minute, Morocco were awarded a corner kick taken by Brahim Díaz, Morocco’s No. 10. What followed plunged the stadium into confusion and controversy.
Amid protests over earlier refereeing decisions — including a disallowed Senegal goal and a contentious penalty call — several Senegalese players walked off the pitch in protest, heading towards the dressing room in disbelief.

In an extraordinary show of leadership, Sadio Mané intervened. The Senegal legend urged his teammates to return to the field, calming tempers and ensuring the match could continue.

Missed Penalty Turns the Tide

Moments later, Morocco were awarded a penalty — a decision that further inflamed tensions. Brahim Díaz stepped up to take the spot kick, but in a dramatic twist, the penalty was missed, sending shockwaves through the stadium and reigniting Senegal’s belief. The miss proved to be a turning point.

Senegal Strike When It Matters Most

Buoyed by the escape, Senegal immediately seized the momentum. Showing hunger and resolve, they pressed forward and were rewarded moments later with the decisive goal — a clinical finish that silenced the home crowd and sent the Senegal bench into wild celebration.
Against the odds, and in the face of intense pressure, Senegal held on to secure victory and lift the AFCON trophy.
