Ambassador-designate, Reno Omokri, has revealed that he apologised to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the harsh comments he made against him during the 2023 presidential election campaigns.
Omokri, who was a vocal critic of President Tinubu at the time, had accused him of several issues, including falsely claiming to be a graduate of the Chicago State University. In the course of his campaign against Tinubu, he made a number of derogatory statements that attracted widespread public attention.
However, Omokri made a dramatic political turnaround in October 2023 and has since been seen aligning with and working alongside the Tinubu-led administration, a development that surprised many Nigerians. Recently, he was confirmed as an ambassador-designate and is expected to be deployed in due course.
Speaking in an interview on Channels Television on Tuesday, February 11, Omokri said he formally withdrew his past allegations against President Tinubu after the Supreme Court affirmed Tinubu’s election victory.
He explained that he later visited the Chicago State University and confirmed that President Tinubu indeed attended the institution, prompting him to dismiss his earlier claims.
Omokri further disclosed that in October 2024, he had a private meeting with President Tinubu, during which he apologised for all the allegations and comments he had made against him in the past.
During the interview, the anchor referenced a previous statement by Omokri in which he vowed never to work for a Tinubu administration, saying it was “not in his DNA.” When asked whether his “DNA” had changed, Omokri responded, “No, my DNA has not changed. I am not eating my words. I never said I cannot work for Nigeria.”
He added, “As an ambassador, I am working for Nigeria. I am going to be an ambassador of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
