Rotary International, in collaboration with the Gombe State Government through the Gombe State Primary Health Care Development Agency, has carried out joint community health outreaches across five locations in the state as part of efforts to reduce maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality.
The outreach, held between March 16 and 19, 2026, covered London Mai Dorawa, in Gombe Local Government Area; Kalorgu community, Shamaki ward, and Ture Balam in Kaltungo LGA; as well as Liji ward, Gindin Waziri, and Ngare community in Zambuk ward of Yamaltu/Deba LGA.
The initiative forms part of the ongoing “Together for Healthy Families in Nigeria (PoS)” project being implemented in Gombe, Ekiti, Nasarawa, and the Federal Capital Territory under the leadership of Country Director and National Coordinator, Emmanuel Lufadeju.
Speaking on the outreach, the District Head of London Mai Dorawa, Mallam Adamu Garba, commended the intervention, describing it as timely and impactful.
“We appreciate Rotary International for bringing healthcare services closer to our people. These essential services have been provided right at our doorstep, and this will greatly improve the well-being of our community,” he said.
Similarly, the District Head of Liji community, Mallam Umar Abdullahi, expressed gratitude for the free medical services.
“This initiative has helped many of our people who ordinarily cannot afford healthcare. We are grateful for this support and hope it continues,” he noted.
No fewer than 48 skilled healthcare worker 16 from each participating LGA were engaged for the exercise. The team comprised nurses, midwives, Community Health Officers (CHOs), Community Health Extension Workers (CHEWs), laboratory technicians, pharmacy technicians, medical records personnel, and social mobilization officers.
Other stakeholders who participated included Ward Development Committee members, Local Government Reproductive Health Coordinators, Monitoring and Evaluation officers, Maternal and Child Health coordinators, and members of the Rotary Club of Kaltungo.
During the outreach, more than 1,500 residents including children aged 5–15 years, women of childbearing age, and elderly men and women accessed various healthcare services.
Community members across the benefiting areas expressed appreciation to Rotary International for prioritising their health needs.
The Rotary Representative in Gombe State, Mr Mohammed Ndus, also lauded the state government for its support.
“We commend Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya for prioritising healthcare delivery in Gombe State and for supporting Rotary’s interventions. This partnership is key to improving health outcomes,” he said.
Ndus further praised the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Habu Dahiru, for his commitment to strengthening healthcare services.
“The Commissioner has demonstrated dedication to improving the health sector and has maintained an open-door policy that enables collaborations like this to thrive,” he added.
The outreach is expected to contribute significantly to ongoing efforts aimed at improving primary healthcare access and reducing preventable deaths among vulnerable populations in Gombe State.
