Gawuna disclosed this in a letter dated March 27, 2026, addressed to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. A copy of the letter was made available to PUNCH Online on Monday. He stated that his resignation takes effect from March 31, 2026.

He said the decision was in compliance with a directive by Bola Ahmed Tinubu requiring political appointees to step down in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act.

“I write to formally tender my resignation as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, effective March 31, 2026,” he stated.

Gawuna expressed appreciation to the President for the opportunity to serve in various capacities, including his earlier appointment as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Bayero University, Kano.

“I am deeply grateful to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for the immense trust he placed in me. It has been an honour to serve and contribute to the development of our nation,” he said.

He added that he would ensure a smooth transition in line with official directives.

“As I take this step, I place my future entirely in the hands of Allah, seeking His guidance on the final decision that lies ahead,” he added.

The development comes amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Gawuna widely speculated to be considering a defection from the APC to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), particularly within the Kwankwasiyya political bloc.

Gawuna was the APC governorship candidate in Kano State during the 2023 general elections, where he polled 890,705 votes, while the incumbent Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, scored 1,019,602 votes to emerge the winner.

His resignation has further fuelled discussions about possible shifts within Kano’s political landscape as major actors continue to reassess their affiliations.
