A fire outbreak on Sunday night destroyed parts of Mile Six Market in Jalingo, Taraba State.
Eyewitnesses told PERISCOPE NIGERIA on Monday that the incident started around 11:00 p.m., when traders had already closed for the day.
Security sources said the cause of the fire had yet to be ascertained as of the time of filing this report.
An eyewitness, Mr. Yakubu Sunday, said, “The cause of the fire is yet to be known, but it spread very fast. It was very difficult to control due to the intensity of the flames.”
He added, “We were chatting close to the main road when we heard shouts of ‘fire.’ By the time we got there, the entire row of shops in the building was already engulfed in flames.”
A shop owner, Mr. Moses Baba, said he lost goods worth millions of naira to the incident.
“I was at home with my family late in the evening when I received a distress call asking me to rush to my shop immediately. On arrival, I watched helplessly as my shop was completely engulfed by flames,” he recounted.
The victims have called on the Taraba State Government, corporate organisations, and well-meaning individuals to come to their aid to help ease the impact of the destruction.
