The management of the University of Maiduguri has formally admitted a total of 6,553 students, reaffirming its resilience and commitment to academic excellence despite funding challenges and infrastructural limitations.

Speaking at the Convocation Square, the Vice-Chancellor, Mohammed Laminu Mele, addressed students, parents and guests during the university’s 44th matriculation ceremony on Tuesday, noting that the Faculty of Life Sciences recorded the highest intake of 1,189 students — the largest in the university’s history.
“Despite the difficulties we have faced, including insurgency and resource constraints, the university has remained strong,” he said.
“Discipline is the foundation of success. There will be many temptations and shortcuts along the way, but remember that true academic success must be earned. Your character will define you even more than your academic results,” he added.
Prof. Mele said the students were admitted into 100 and 200 level degree programmes through the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), Direct Entry, and placements from the university’s remedial arts and science programmes.
He explained that faculties such as Life Sciences, Education, Physical Sciences and Engineering recorded the highest number of admissions.
The Vice-Chancellor urged the students to embrace discipline, hard work and moral values.
“I strongly advise you to avoid examination malpractice, cultism, drug abuse, misuse of social media and violence. The university will not tolerate acts that threaten peace and discipline on campus,” he warned.
He noted that students found guilty of misconduct would face disciplinary measures, including expulsion and possible prosecution.
Prof. Mele further stressed the importance of dedication and personal effort.
“In your classrooms, laboratories, studios and workshops, you must commit fully to your studies. Success depends on your hard work. Honesty, integrity and respect will define you more than academic results,” he said.
He also thanked parents and guardians for entrusting their children to the university, assuring them of a conducive environment for learning and development.
The Registrar, Ahmad Alhaji Lawan, who administered the matriculation oath to the students, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to providing a conducive learning environment and robust support services.
He congratulated the new students and wished them success in their academic pursuits.
