Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has welcomed the return of former governor and senator, Ibrahim Shekarau, to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the development as a significant boost to the party’s strength in the state.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, the governor said Shekarau’s return would reinforce the party’s structure and expand its political influence in Kano ahead of future elections.
According to the statement, a date for Shekarau’s formal reception into the APC would be announced soon in consultation with the party’s national leadership.
Yusuf noted that the APC in Kano had continued to record growing support and consolidation across the state, positioning it as a dominant political force.
“The party in Kano continues to witness increasing support and consolidation, strengthening its position as the most dominant political force in the state,” the statement said.
He added that the party was fully prepared to win all elective positions in upcoming elections, attributing the confidence to unity among members and strategic political alignments.
The governor also assured party faithful of the leadership’s commitment to deepening internal cohesion and broadening grassroots support across Kano.
He urged members to remain steadfast and intensify mobilisation efforts as preparations for future elections gather momentum.
Meanwhile, Shekarau had earlier announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In a letter dated April 19, 2026, addressed to the PDP chairman of Giginyu Ward in Nassarawa Local Government Area, the former governor said his resignation took immediate effect.
“Accept this letter as notice of my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party with effect from today,” he wrote.
Shekarau explained that the decision followed extensive consultations within his political group, adding that it was part of a broader plan to continue his political career on a new platform.
He also expressed gratitude to party leaders at the ward level and prayed for continued guidance in their service.
His return to the APC is expected to significantly reshape political dynamics in Kano ahead of the next election cycle.
