The Catholic Bishop of Aba Diocese, Most Rev. Prof. Augustine Ndubueze Echema, has endorsed Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, for a second term in office, citing what he described as remarkable transformation and people-oriented governance across the state.

The endorsement was made on Thursday, April 2, during the 2026 Chrism Mass held at Christ the King Catholic (CKC) Cathedral, Aba, where the Bishop spoke on behalf of the Catholic faithful in the Diocese.
According to a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, Bishop Echema commended the administration’s achievements in key sectors, including improved security, enhanced urban sanitation, street lighting, educational reforms, and sustained engagement with faith communities.
He particularly praised the visible transformation in Aba and other parts of the state, noting that Governor Otti’s leadership has demonstrated that governance is practical and service-driven.
“Thank you for cleaning up Aba—who would have believed it? Thank you for lighting up our streets, reducing crime, sustaining peace, and for worshipping with our people across denominations,” the Bishop said.
Describing the Governor’s three years in office as impactful and successful, Bishop Echema added: “You have proved that governance is not rocket science, but a service with a human face. Nobody is campaigning for you; rather, your impact is campaigning for you.”
The cleric also highlighted improvements at Abia State University, Uturu, noting that the ongoing infrastructure overhaul has significantly enhanced the learning environment and restored confidence in the institution.
“It is not just about the message; it is about the work you have done. The complete overhaul of the school’s infrastructure has impacted the lives of students,” he said, adding that the intervention reflects broader achievements of the administration.
Welcoming the Governor and his wife, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, to the Chrism Mass, Bishop Echema described their presence as symbolic and appreciated by the Church community.
In his response, Governor Otti expressed gratitude for the endorsement, describing it as meaningful to both himself and the people of Abia State.
“I thank our Father in the Lord for his kind words. This endorsement means so much—not just to me, but to all Abians,” he said.
The Governor assured that his administration would sustain its developmental strides as it enters its fourth year, citing the near completion of the CKC water scheme among ongoing projects aimed at improving residents’ quality of life.
He also issued a warning against planned protests allegedly being orchestrated to disrupt peace in Aba, stating that the government would not tolerate any form of unrest.
According to him, intelligence reports suggest that some individuals are mobilising outsiders to stage a protest under false pretences.
He cautioned those involved to desist or face legal consequences.
Governor Otti further urged parents and guardians to caution their children against being used to foment trouble, particularly under the guise of agitations that could destabilise the city.
He also encouraged eligible residents to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of future elections, reiterating his administration’s commitment to peace, security, and inclusive development.
The Governor was accompanied to the event by his wife and top government officials.
