Christians across the world have entered Holy Week, beginning with Palm Sunday—the commemoration of the triumphal entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem. It marks the start of the most sacred period in the Christian calendar, a time set aside for reflection on the life, sacrifice and resurrection of Christ.

Palm Sunday recalls the moment Jesus entered Jerusalem to a jubilant reception, as crowds waved palm branches and spread their cloaks on the road, proclaiming: “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” (Matthew 21:8–9). While it was a moment of celebration and honour, it also carried deep spiritual significance. It revealed a King unlike any other—one who came in humility before reigning in glory.

According to the Gospels, Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey, fulfilling ancient prophecy that the King would come “gentle and riding on a donkey.”

Unlike earthly rulers who displayed power through conquest, Christ demonstrated a kingdom defined by peace, service and humility. His life—from birth in a manger to His ministry of compassion—reflected a divine mission centred on salvation rather than domination.

Palm Sunday stands out as one of the rare occasions when Jesus was publicly acknowledged as King.

The waving of palm branches, a symbol of victory and honour, underscored the people’s recognition of His significance, even if many did not fully understand His mission.

Yet, this moment of praise was fleeting. Within days, the same city that welcomed Him would turn against Him, highlighting the fragile nature of human loyalty.

The day is therefore marked by both joy and sorrow. Even as He was being celebrated, Jesus wept over Jerusalem, knowing the suffering that lay ahead.

His entry into the city was not to claim an earthly throne, but to walk the path to the cross—fully aware of the sacrifice it would demand.

Palm Sunday ultimately points to a profound truth: Christ’s kingship is rooted in sacrificial love.

Beyond its historical significance, Palm Sunday serves as a call to reflection for believers. It challenges Christians to consider their own response to Christ—whether their devotion is steadfast or conditional.

True recognition of Jesus as King goes beyond words; it demands obedience, humility and a life surrendered to His will.

Holy Week progresses with deeply symbolic observances, including Maundy Thursday, which commemorates the Last Supper and Christ’s act of washing His disciples’ feet—a powerful demonstration of humility and servant leadership.

At the Cathedral Church of the Advent, the Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Henry Ndukuba, led the Maundy Thursday service on April 2, 2026.

The ceremony featured the symbolic washing of feet, re-enacting Christ’s example during the Passover meal with His disciples.

The rite, also observed in churches across Nigeria and globally, underscores the Christian call to humility, service and selfless love.

Earlier in the day, the Primate performed a similar act at the Wuse Chapel, washing the feet of clergy, church officials and laity, reinforcing the message that true leadership is defined by service.

Good Friday follows, marking the crucifixion of Jesus Christ alongside two criminals—a moment of profound sacrifice for humanity. This solemn remembrance leads into Holy Saturday, a period of quiet reflection, before culminating in the celebration of Easter Sunday.

Easter represents the cornerstone of the Christian faith—the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

It affirms the victory over sin and death, offering believers the hope of eternal life.

For Christians, the resurrection is not only a symbol of triumph but also a reassurance that suffering, persecution and death do not have the final word.

Ultimately, Holy Week encapsulates the essence of the Christian message: humility, sacrifice, redemption and hope.

It reminds believers that the path to glory is often paved with sacrifice, and that faith in Christ carries the promise of renewal and eternal life.

As Christians journey through this sacred season, they are called not only to remember these events but to embody their meaning—living lives marked by humility, service and unwavering faith.

“Hosanna to our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.”
