A yet-to-be-identified female corps member has reportedly lost her life after an evening drill at the National Youth Service Corps temporary orientation camp in Maiduguri, Borno State.
Our correspondent gathered that the corps member died on Monday evening.
When contacted for comment on Wednesday, the Public Relations Officer of the NYSC in the state, Abdullahi Yuguda, declined to speak, saying the matter required specific protocol.
“This issue involves protocol. Please call the State Coordinator; he will give you the details you need regarding the incident,” he said.
When contacted, the State NYSC Coordinator, Nasir Bello, said he could not comment as of press time.
“I am in a lecture hall presently,” Bello added.
However, sources familiar with the incident within the camp told our correspondent that the deceased corps member collapsed after Monday’s evening drill. She was rushed to the camp clinic and later referred to a hospital, where she was confirmed dead.
A top security official within the camp, who spoke said the corps member died from an ailment that may have been triggered by the drill.
“We had a successful drill that day, and nobody fell during the exercise to the best of my knowledge. But in the evening, the lady collapsed, possibly due to the exercise. She was rushed to the camp clinic and later taken to a hospital in town, where she was confirmed dead,” the source said.
Another source, a serving corps member, told correspondents that the deceased was a diabetic patient.
“During our evening devotion on Tuesday at the Nigerian Christian Corps Members’ Fellowship house, it was announced that the corps member had been rushed to the clinic after collapsing. Unfortunately, she later died,” the source said.
The source added, “I learnt she was diabetic. Her drugs were reportedly seized at the camp gate when she arrived, and she had not been taking them, according to what her friends said.”
