Governor Siminalayi Fubara has announced his withdrawal from the governorship primaries of the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 elections, citing the need to preserve peace, stability, and unity in Rivers State.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the Rivers State governor said the decision followed “deep reflection and extensive consultations” with family members, friends, and political associates.
Fubara described the move as difficult but necessary, stressing that personal ambition must sometimes give way to the larger interest of the state.
“Rivers State is bigger than any individual, and at this critical moment, the peace, stability, and unity of our dear state must take precedence over every personal interest,” he stated.
The governor pledged support for whoever eventually emerges as the APC governorship candidate, urging party faithful to remain united and committed to the party.
He also acknowledged the sacrifices of his supporters throughout the political process, expressing gratitude for their loyalty and steadfastness despite the disappointment his decision may cause.
“I understand the disappointment, the anger, and the pain many of you may feel. Much has indeed been invested and much sacrificed along the way,” Fubara said.
In what appeared to be a veiled reference to internal political pressures, the governor hinted at difficult circumstances surrounding the race but refrained from giving details.
“As our elders say, not everything a hunter sees in the forest is spoken of in the marketplace. Some truths are best borne quietly, not out of fear, but out of wisdom and restraint for the sake of peace and a greater purpose,” he added.
Fubara expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support and encouragement, while reaffirming his loyalty to the APC.
He maintained that his withdrawal should not be interpreted as weakness or surrender but as a sacrifice aimed at ensuring political stability in the state.
“Let it be clearly understood that I stepped aside not out of weakness, fear, or surrender, but out of conviction and sacrifice so that Rivers State may move forward in peace and unity,” the governor declared.
The development is expected to reshape the political landscape in Rivers State and could significantly influence the APC’s internal dynamics ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
