The senator representing Gombe South Senatorial District, Anthony Yaro, has officially returned to the Peoples Democratic Party after weeks of political uncertainty surrounding his defection to the All Progressives Congress.
The lawmaker had resigned his PDP membership in a letter dated March 25, 2026.
However, following turnout of APC consensus nomination Yaro lost out to his friend and associate Jerry Damara.
In a statement obtained on Saturday, the lawmaker appealed to his supporters for understanding and forgiveness over his recent political movement, saying his initial decision to join the APC was driven by a desire to better serve the interests of his constituents at the national level.
“With a heart full of gratitude and a spirit of deep reflection, I come before you today not just as a politician, but as your servant, your son, and your sitting senator,” Yaro stated.
He acknowledged that his recent political decisions may have caused concern among his supporters across the senatorial district.
“I am fully aware that the past few weeks have been marked by political uncertainty, and I understand that my recent actions may have raised questions, concerns, and even disappointment among many of you who have stood firmly by me. For any confusion or concern my political movement may have caused, I humbly ask for your understanding and forgiveness,” he said.
The senator explained that his move to the APC was not out of hatred for the PDP, but based on his belief that collaboration with the ruling party would help him attract greater opportunities and representation for the people of Gombe South.
“Why I left the PDP initially was not out of disdain for our great party, but out of a sincere belief that joining the APC would allow me to better serve your interests at the national level. I sought collaboration, not confrontation. However, this was not realized as a sitting senator,” he added.
According to Yaro, extensive consultations with family members, political associates, elder statesmen, and constituents influenced his decision to return to the PDP.
“After wide consultations with my family, my political associates, elder statesmen, and most importantly, with you through the feedback we received across our local governments, the path became clear. I have therefore decided to return to the Peoples Democratic Party to complete the journey we started together,” he said.
The senator described the PDP as the political platform that first believed in the collective aspirations of the people of Gombe South.
“The PDP remains the party that first believed in our collective dream for a greater Gombe South, a dream of better roads, functional schools, accessible healthcare, and empowered youths and women,” Yaro noted.
He urged his supporters not to see his return to the party as an act of inconsistency, but rather one of accountability and courage.
“To my supporters and all constituents, I ask that you see this return not as a sign of confusion, but as an act of courage and accountability. I am still the same Anthony Siyako Yaro. My loyalty has always been, and will always be, to you first,” he said.
Reaffirming his political ambition and commitment to the people of the district, Yaro declared that he remained prepared to continue representing their interests.
“I am ready to run. I am ready to win. I am ready to continue defending your interests with every breath in my body,” he declared.
He called on the people of Gombe South to remain united and focused on shaping their political future.
“Let us move forward together. Let us prove that the people of Gombe South are not pawns in any political chess game; we are the architects of our own destiny,” the senator added.
