Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday said contesting for Nigeria’s presidency is “not a computer game” as he responded to growing calls by youth groups urging him to join the 2027 presidential race.

Jonathan spoke while receiving members of various youth groups who visited his office in Abuja to appeal to him to contest the next general election.

Responding to the request, the former president said leadership required deep reflection and broad consultations before any decision could be taken.

“You are asking me to come and contest the next election. Presidential race is not a computer game. But I’ve heard you and I’ll consult widely,” Jonathan stated.

He commended the youths for their interest in national affairs, describing patriotism and active participation as vital ingredients for nation-building.

“If you have no interest in the country, you will not bother to be here,” he added.

Jonathan also urged young Nigerians to continue advocating for peace and credible elections, warning that flawed electoral processes discourage competent citizens from participating in politics.

“The key thing we need in this country is peace. You continue to advocate for that. And you continue to advocate for peaceful and credible elections in the country. Because if we don’t have peaceful and credible elections, most good citizens will not want to get involved in politics,” he said.

The former president expressed concern over Nigeria’s low voter turnout during elections, describing it as one of the worst globally despite the country’s huge voting population.

According to him, the Independent National Electoral Commission should investigate the causes of voter apathy and engage experts to improve participation in the electoral process.

“I’ve observed elections in more than 14 African countries and even Southeast Asia. Nigeria has the lowest turnout in every election cycle,” he said.

Jonathan challenged the youths to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards and participate actively in elections rather than merely calling on leaders to contest.

“If I ask how many of you have your voter’s card now, probably 50 per cent of you don’t have it. And you’re asking me to go and contest the election. So you must participate in the electoral process,” he added.

The former president further lamented the negative perception faced by Nigerians abroad, attributing it partly to years of leadership failures in the country.

He, however, maintained that he had only listened to the appeals and would continue consultations before taking any decision on the 2027 presidential election.

“I cannot just wake up and say I want to be the president of Nigeria again. But I am telling you that I will consult,” Jonathan said.
