A group under the aegis of Concerned APC Youths Bauchi South has asked the Senate President and the APC National Chairman to declare the seat of Senator Shehu Buba vacant after he defected to the People’s Redemption Party (PRP).
In a press statement signed by the group’s chairman, Aminu Garba, the youths said the petition was lodged on 2nd July, 2026 and was received by both the Office of the Senate President and the APC National Secretariat.
The group hinged its demand on Section 68(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which mandates a lawmaker to vacate his seat upon defecting from the party that sponsored his election.
According to Aminu, the move was prompted by “the Senator’s public defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC), the political party under whose platform he was elected, to the People’s Redemption Party (PRP).”
The group insisted that the constitution must be upheld by all public officials.
“We firmly believe that the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria remains supreme and must be respected by every elected public office holder irrespective of political status or influence” the statement reads.
The youths noted that Senator Buba’s mandate was secured on the APC platform, and that leaving the party voluntarily should attract constitutional consequences.
They urged the President of the Senate, the National Assembly, the APC National Working Committee, INEC and other relevant bodies “to urgently consider and act on our petition in accordance with the Constitution and the rule of law.”
The concerned APC youths also gave a 14-day ultimatum, warning that if no action is taken within that period, they will pursue further legal steps.
