“Mary Habila is somebody’s daughter, somebody’s sister, somebody’s niece, a human being for God’s sake. Found dead in the house of Minister David Umahi. Must be thoroughly investigated. One day all of this immunity will end and justice shall prevail.”
That is the cry of a country that is tired.
Behind every headline is a name. Behind every name is a family that will never be the same. Mary Habila was not just “news.” She was loved. She had people who called her, waited for her, and believed she would come home.
When a death happens in the house of a public official, silence is not an option. Questions must be asked. Facts must be gathered. A thorough, transparent, and independent investigation is the only way to honor her life and to protect public trust.
Power should never be a shield against truth. Immunity is meant to protect office, not to bury justice.
We cannot assume guilt. We also cannot assume it away. The law must speak, evidence must speak, and the process must be seen to be fair.
One day, every public office will answer to the people.
Until that day, the least we owe Mary Habila is this: investigate fully, tell the truth, and let justice, not status, have the final word.
