The National Association of Nigerian Students has rejected the reported increase in registration fees for examinations conducted by the West African Examinations Council and the National Examinations Council, calling on the Federal Ministry of Education to reverse the decision.
In a statement signed by its President, Akinteye Babatunde, NANS described the fee review as an additional burden on students and parents already facing economic hardship.
The association expressed concern that the fees for both WAEC and NECO examinations had reportedly been increased to ₦50,000 each, raising the combined cost to ₦100,000 before additional charges imposed by schools.
According to NANS, the development could limit access to secondary school certification examinations, particularly for students from low-income households.
The students’ body also criticised the Ministry of Education for allegedly approving the increase without consulting NANS or other representatives of Nigerian students.
“The decision was taken without due process and without due regard for the economic realities facing ordinary Nigerian students,” the statement said.
NANS urged the Federal Ministry of Education to immediately reverse the increase and ensure that future decisions affecting students are made in consultation with the leadership of Nigerian students.
The association reiterated its commitment to advocating for policies that promote affordable and accessible education for all Nigerian students.
