Former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has condemned the recent wave of political violence in Delta State, alleging that it signals a coordinated campaign of intimidation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued on his behalf by his Special Adviser on Strategy and Communications, Godwin Anaughe, Omo-Agege described the attack on the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Hon. Temple Mudi, during a meeting of APC Delta Central leaders and stakeholders at the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) Conference Centre, Effurun, as “political thuggery.”

According to the statement, Hon. Mudi was allegedly attacked with stones, machetes and bottles by suspected thugs during the meeting held on Sunday, July 26, an incident the former deputy senate president said should concern all residents of the state.

The statement linked the attack to an earlier incident involving the New Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate, Deacon Chris Iyovwaye, who was allegedly attacked by hoodlums while attempting to visit his community in Agholokpe.

Omo-Agege alleged that the two incidents indicate an emerging pattern of political violence as the 2027 elections draw closer, warning that such attacks could threaten peaceful political participation and the credibility of the electoral process.

He further claimed to have received credible intelligence suggesting plans to orchestrate violence and intimidate opposition leaders and their supporters across Delta State ahead of the polls.

The former deputy senate president called on the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Inspector-General of Police to conduct a thorough investigation into both incidents, identify and prosecute those responsible, and prevent further acts of political violence.

He also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), civil society organisations and the international community to closely monitor the political situation in Delta State, particularly Delta Central Senatorial District, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Reaffirming his commitment to peaceful, issue-based politics, Omo-Agege called on political stakeholders and the electorate to reject violence and uphold the sanctity of the ballot. He maintained that his political camp would not be intimidated by acts of violence or threats aimed at undermining the democratic process.
