This Igbo-Yoruba beef is contrived, history tells a different story, by Destiny O. Enabulele

Socrates feared writing would create people who could recite without understanding. If he saw us today, he would weep.

We now carry the Library of Alexandria in our pockets and still walk around empty.

First, access without depth. Cell phones give us Google, Wikipedia, lectures, archives. But we don’t study. We scroll. We watch thirty-second takes and call it research. We can quote a thread we never read past the headline.

Second, memory without training. Because everything is “saved,” we remember nothing. Phone numbers, directions, dates, poems outsourced. Our minds have become browsers with a hundred tabs open and no bookmark for wisdom.

Third, noise without discernment. The world’s knowledge is here, but so is every lie, meme, and hot take. And we are too distracted to tell the difference. We know every celebrity gist, but not how our local council budget works.

Socrates wanted dialogue, questioning, struggle. The phone offers answers without questions.

The tragedy isn’t technology. It’s us. We didn’t lose knowledge. We traded it for convenience.

Until we choose to read, reflect, and argue again, we’ll keep holding the world and knowing nothing of it.

“I cannot teach anybody anything. I can only make them think.” – Socrates
