A Birthday Tribute to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress
At 58, Professor Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda stands at an important intersection of scholarship, public service, political leadership and national responsibility.
His journey from engineering and academia, through electoral administration and ministerial service, to the national chairmanship of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-is a story of knowledge progressively translated into public leadership.
Born on August 8, 1968, Professor Yilwatda built an impressive academic and professional career in engineering, digital systems and information technology before moving into public administration and politics. He served as a Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), later became the APC governorship candidate in Plateau State in 2023, and subsequently served as Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction before assuming the leadership of the APC in July 2025.
These experiences matter because party leadership at the national level requires more than political visibility. It requires institutional understanding, strategic thinking, negotiation, discipline and the capacity to reconcile competing interests. Yilwatda’s professional trajectory has given him exposure to precisely these different dimensions of governance.
Since becoming National Chairman, he has increasingly positioned the APC around the imperatives of unity, discipline, grassroots mobilisation, effective communication and institutional consolidation.
His re-election at the party’s March 2026 National Convention, alongside the return of the National Working Committee, represents a significant vote of confidence in his leadership and provides him with a stronger institutional platform for the road to 2027.
Perhaps most significant is his articulation of the APC’s 2027 strategy. Yilwatda has repeatedly emphasised that electoral victory cannot be secured by slogans alone. It requires organisational discipline, internal cohesion, strategic communication and sustained grassroots mobilisation. His memorable formulation that “good governance without communication is invisible” captures the challenge before the ruling party: translating government policies and reforms into understandable narratives that connect with ordinary Nigerians.
His stated ambition is therefore larger than merely winning an election. He has spoken of building a stronger, more transparent, inclusive, disciplined and united APC capable of functioning as a genuinely pan-Nigerian political organisation.
The 2027 election will ultimately test whether this vision can be converted into political reality. For Yilwatda, the challenge will be to consolidate the party without suffocating internal diversity; manage ambition without creating destructive factionalism; mobilise the grassroots without reducing politics to transactional patronage; and defend the party’s electoral record while listening honestly to citizens who remain dissatisfied with government performance.
That is the true measure of political leadership.
On this auspicious 58th birthday, therefore, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda deserves recognition not simply for occupying the office of APC National Chairman, but for the journey of learning, service and leadership that brought him there.
May Almighty God grant him sound health, wisdom, courage, humility and renewed strength as he continues to serve the APC and Nigeria. May his leadership contribute to a more cohesive political party, a stronger democratic culture and a more prosperous nation.
