Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, has ordered the withdrawal of a complaint filed against Denis Odama, a young Cross Riverian accused of making a derogatory statement against him.

Otu, in a statement, said he had directed the aides who reported Odama to the police to withdraw the complaint.
He also directed the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice to urgently review the case and take appropriate legal steps to discontinue the prosecution, paving the way for Odama’s release from the correctional centre.
The governor said his decision was informed by his commitment to the constitutional right to freedom of expression, guaranteed under Section 39 of the 1999 Constitution.
“I remain committed to upholding this right for all Cross Riverians, including those who criticise me,” Otu said.
While urging young people to exercise their right to free expression responsibly, the governor said criticism should be guided by respect for the cultural and moral values of the state.
Otu said the people elected him to listen to their suggestions, advice and constructive criticism, assuring that he would continue to listen and act where necessary.
He reiterated that protecting the peace and interests of Cross River State remained a collective responsibility.
