They called it “Peace Accord” signing. Cameras, signatures, handshakes, and speeches about civility.

But what is a “Peace Accord” worth when President Tinubu told his co-travelers that “all is fair in politics”? What is it worth when the President himself made that inglorious remark that “election is not served a la carte in a restaurant and must be grabbed, snatched, and run with it at all costs”?

From the foregoing, the “Peace Accord” is dead on arrival.

You cannot preach peace in the morning and preach war in the evening. You cannot ask candidates to sign civility while the leader of the party tells them to grab, snatch, and run. That is not statesmanship. That is a license for brigandage.

Nigerians should not be bamboozled or deceived by this charade or smokescreen. A peace accord without consequences for violence is just expensive theater. It insults voters in Edo, Osun, and every other state where thugs have turned ballots into battlegrounds.

If the President truly wants peace, let him say so clearly to his party, his appointees, and his co-travelers. Call out intimidation. Sanction impunity. Protect INEC. Protect voters. Protect the vote.

“All is fair in politics” is not a democratic principle. It is the language of Capo di tutti i capi and the jungle. And “grab it at all costs” is how democracies die.

The Peace Accord must mean something, or it means nothing. Nigerians are watching. We want elections where votes count, not where muscles count.

Sign the paper, yes. But live the promise.
