Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said the All Progressives Congress (APC) could have won the Osun State governorship election if President Bola Tinubu had been determined to secure victory “at all costs.”
Wike made the assertion on Tuesday while speaking with journalists during an inspection of flood-prone areas in Maitama, Abuja.
The minister was reacting to the outcome of the election, which was won by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate and incumbent governor, Ademola Adeleke.
Wike, a PDP member who has continued to support the Tinubu administration, said he would have personally gone to Osun State to help the APC secure victory if the President had wanted the party to win regardless of the circumstances.
“If the President had wanted to win the Osun State election at all costs, I would have been there and we would have won it, and there’s nothing the governor can do,” he said.
Adeleke was declared the winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), defeating the APC candidate.
Wike’s remarks come amid continued political interest in his position as a PDP member serving in an APC-led federal administration.
The former Rivers State governor was one of the five PDP governors known as the G5, who opposed the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, during the 2023 general elections.
Since his appointment as FCT minister by President Tinubu, Wike has maintained his PDP membership while openly backing the President and several policies of his administration.
His latest comments further highlight his continued political alignment with Tinubu, despite retaining his membership of the opposition PDP.
