Hafsat Abubakar, the woman arrested over the alleged circulation of a forged document claiming that OPay was ending its operations in Nigeria, has said she deleted the post and publicly apologised after the company clarified that the document was fake.

Abubakar said she initially shared the document on her X account but took it down after seeing a notice from OPay disputing its authenticity.

According to her, she also issued a public apology over the post before she was arrested five days later in Zaria, Kaduna State, following a petition allegedly filed by OPay.

“After I posted it on my X page, I deleted it after I saw OPay’s notice that it was fake, and I publicly apologised. Five days later, I was picked up in Zaria, Kaduna State, following a petition by OPay,” she said.

The case centres on the alleged distribution of a forged document purporting to announce OPay’s withdrawal from operations, with Abubakar now facing the consequences of the alleged publication.

Her account has brought renewed attention to the circumstances surrounding the arrest and the steps she said she took after learning that the document was not genuine.
