Four police officers and other residents have been killed in an attack on Ayilamo community in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State, with Governor Hyacinth Alia condemning the incident and commending the Department of State Services (DSS) for arresting three suspects allegedly linked to the attack.
Alia described the attack as a “despicable act” and a grave threat to the security and stability of the state, particularly the people of Ayilamo and neighbouring communities.
The governor’s reaction was contained in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, in which he expressed condolences to the families of the victims, the people of Ayilamo and the entire Logo Local Government Area.
“This despicable act is an attack on the peace-loving people of Ayilamo and a grave threat to the security and stability of Benue State,” Alia said.
He described the killing of the four police officers as particularly painful, noting that their deaths underscored the sacrifices made by security personnel in the line of duty.
Alia also commiserated with the Inspector-General of Police and the Commissioner of Police in Benue State over the loss of the officers.
“We honour their courage and sacrifice and pray that God grants their families, colleagues, and loved ones the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” he said.
The governor commended DSS personnel in Benue and Nasarawa states for what he described as a prompt and professional operation that led to the arrest of three suspects allegedly connected to the attack.
He said the arrests represented an important step towards uncovering the circumstances surrounding the incident and bringing those responsible to justice.
Alia urged the DSS to intensify its investigation and make full use of information obtained from the suspects to track down other individuals allegedly involved in the attack.
“Every available lead should be diligently followed to identify and arrest the remaining accomplices, sponsors, collaborators, and other persons connected with the attack. All those found culpable must face the full weight of the law,” he said.
The governor said the incident was a disturbing reminder of the persistent insecurity and repeated attacks targeting vulnerable communities and security personnel in parts of Benue State.
He assured residents that his administration would continue to work with security agencies to strengthen security in Ayilamo, Logo and other vulnerable communities across the state.
According to him, the state government would support efforts to prevent further attacks, protect lives and property, restore peace and provide assistance to affected communities.
Alia also appealed to residents of Ayilamo and neighbouring communities to remain calm and vigilant while investigations continue, urging them to provide credible and timely information to security agencies.
He assured residents that his administration remained committed to protecting lives and property, upholding justice and restoring lasting peace across Benue State.
