The wheels may have stopped spinning, the cheering may have faded, and the dust may have settled, but the message of the Jos Christian Refuge for Children Foundation (JCRFCF) Road Cycling Race for Orphans (JRCRFO) remains powerful: every child deserves an opportunity to dream, compete, excel and rise beyond the circumstances of birth.

What unfolded in Jos was more than a sporting competition. It was a compelling demonstration of how sports can become an instrument of social inclusion, child empowerment and community transformation. By bringing orphaned and vulnerable children into the competitive world of road cycling, JCRFCF challenged conventional perceptions of vulnerability and replaced them with a powerful narrative of courage, capability and possibility.

The 2026 edition was not simply about bicycles, medals or finishing positions. It was about giving children who are frequently positioned at the margins of society an opportunity to occupy the centre of public attention not as objects of sympathy, but as athletes, competitors and emerging champions.

Indeed, the greatest achievement of the race was not merely crossing the finish line; it was demonstrating that adversity does not have to determine destiny.

At the heart of JRCRFO were the children themselves. Through rigorous preparation, determination, discipline and remarkable courage, participating cyclists demonstrated that excellence is not the exclusive privilege of those born into favourable circumstances.

Their participation represented an important statement about the potential of orphaned and vulnerable children (OVCs), particularly when provided with structured opportunities, institutional support and an enabling environment.

Their willingness to train, endure physical challenges, navigate demanding routes and compete for medals reflected the transformative possibilities of sports-based development.

The children did not merely participate in a race; they expanded society’s understanding of what vulnerable children can achieve when given access to opportunity.

The success of JRCRFO was made possible through the generosity and commitment of sponsors, institutional partners, government representatives, sporting organisations and individuals who believed in the vision.

Special appreciation goes to Onigbinde Stores, NASCO Food and Red Crown Cycling Club for their invaluable support.

We equally acknowledge the contributions and encouragement of the Plateau State Commissioner for Agriculture, Barr. Peter Nyam Gai; the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Comrade Prince Miaphen; the Director of Plateau State Sports Council, Prof. Ezra Gunen; the Vice President of the Cycling Federation of Nigeria, Dr. James Iye Mohammed Amidu; the Secretary of Plateau State Cycling Association, Mrs. Rahab Kaze; and Coach Sarah.

Our profound gratitude also goes to Major General Maxwell Dangana, Commander of the Joint Task Force and GOC Operation Enduring Peace; the PDP governorship candidate, Mr. Kefas W. Ropshik (Kefiano); and the Kefiano Foundation, alongside all other individuals and organisations whose contributions strengthened this initiative.

Your support demonstrated that investing in children is not charity alone; it is an investment in human potential, social cohesion and the future of society.

Recognising the Homes, Volunteers and Communities

We deeply appreciate the participating orphanages and care institutions: Gidan Bege, House of RECAP, IgyeAko, KWAVF, IYALI (K3), Abba Shelter, Talmaba, KAMSHACK, JOFIN, ANWARUL and Kefiano Foundation.

Their trust in allowing children under their care to participate in training and the actual competition was central to the success of the initiative.

We also recognise the people of Jos, particularly Apollo Crescent, whose encouragement transformed the race route into a celebration of community solidarity.

Special appreciation goes to the volunteers, race marshals, medical personnel, media practitioners and security agencies, including FRSC, Nigerian Red Cross, PRTVC, NTA, Jay 101.9 FM, Unity FM, TinCity FM and JTF Operation Enduring Peace.

To the JCRFCF Board, management, organising committee and its chairman, your leadership and commitment have demonstrated what purposeful institutional collaboration can accomplish.

As the 2026 race concludes, its significance should inspire a broader conversation about the relationship between sports, child protection and sustainable development.

JRCRFO offers an opportunity to strengthen partnerships, expand youth participation, promote inclusive sporting infrastructure and establish pathways through which talented children can access professional training and development.

As preparations begin for the 2027 edition, the vision must remain bigger than medals: a future where no child’s circumstances become a permanent barrier to discovering and fulfilling their potential.

Ultimately, the greatest legacy of JRCRFO is the hope it has awakened. Jos witnessed children whose stories are not defined by vulnerability, but illuminated by courage and possibility.

To every sponsor, supporter, institution, volunteer and participant, thank you for helping transform an idea into a historic expression of collective humanity.

The race is over, but the mission continues. The wheels may have stopped, but hope is still moving.

Long live JCRFCF! Long live JRCRFO! Long live Nigerian youth sports!
