We are not among those calling for Nigeria to get divided -Gombe Gov
Chima Azubuike, Gombe
Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, has said the unity of the country can not be compromised for anything, adding that there is a need to tackle the common enemy.
The governor also disassociated himself and the North East region from the calls for the fragmentation of the country.
He disclosed this on Wednesday, at the APC constitution review (North East Stakeholders meeting).
“The constitution is man made and it is not a divine regulation as human beings we are bound to make some errors. Or have overlooked some of those issues that needed to be addressed, above all in the cause of operating the constitution there must have been some lapses, we must be ready to correct in order to take our party to the next level.
“Therefore I like to urge each and everyone to contribute in such a way that we will have a document.
“We are not among those calling for Nigeria to get divided, we are not. We are not among those that are trying to separate. The unity and unity of purpose of Nigeria is not Compromisable at all. As a result of that, knowing we have a common problem we have to approach it with common sense of purpose in order to achieve, recover and go out of those problems. There is need for states of the North East to have a common position with regards to this issue.”
While decrying the state of the region, the governor added, “The North East is in underdevelopment, security challenges, and lack of progress in the present day Nigeria.we all have the record from some 11-12 years ago when Boko Haram started that resulted in Insurgency and the subsequent abandonment that happened to us not for Development partners international donor agencies that came to support and bail us out coupled with the effort of the two government we won’t have been sleeping with the two eyes closed. We all know that the ability to deliver on our promises lies on the security we have and our relationship with others.”
Also, Prof. Attahiru Mamman, Chairman of the constitution review committee of the APC said 7 years is a long time for the review of the constitution, adding that there are emerging needs which are expected to be sorted in the exercise.
He said the review will incorporate experiences of the past which will serve as the fulcrum in the party’s constitution.
