In a thrilling match at the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Wellington, New Zealand, Sweden staged an impressive 2-1 comeback against South Africa. The game seemed destined for a draw until Amanda Ilestedt’s last-minute header secured a dramatic victory for Sweden, propelling them to the top of Group G.
South Africa had a chance to secure their first-ever Women’s World Cup points when they took the lead in the 48th minute against Sweden. Hildah Magaia capitalized on a rebound from Thembi Kgatlana’s effort to put her team ahead. Unfortunately, Kgatlana suffered an injury and was substituted shortly after assisting in the opening goal.
Despite South Africa’s efforts to increase their lead, Refilo Jane’s shot narrowly missed the target from 40 yards when Zecira Musovic was caught off her line. The missed opportunity proved costly as Sweden fought back, with Frida Rolfo’s deflected effort finding the back of the net, equalizing the score.
In the final moments of the game, Amanda Ilestedt’s decisive header gave Sweden the edge they needed, snatching victory and leaving South Africa still in search of their first Women’s World Cup point. Although South Africa’s status as the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations champions reflects their prowess, they are yet to make a breakthrough in the World Cup, having lost all their matches in the 2019 tournament.
