No fewer than 270 officers of the Nigerian Police force have been decorated by the Gombe State Commissioner of Police Oqua Etim, on Monday.

Our correspondent reports that 180 policemen were promoted to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police, while 90 unconfirmed Assistant Superintendent of Police were confirmed.

Speaking at the command headquarters Etim lauded the leadership of the acting Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for being instrumental to the promotion, adding that the number recently promoted shows the strength of the current leadership.

Etim said, “for us to produce an IGP who is showering us with promotions like this is a sign of great things to come.”
While enjoining the men of the force to be dedicated and committed to the families, “every good thing comes with a price, the promotion is not for you to just wear ranks, promotion is a call to higher duties,” the Commissioner said.

He enjoined the newly decorated officer not to shy away from courses, as the rate of crime and criminality is fast changing, as such the police office must change with the times in order to be relevant.
“Times are changing in the country more people are getting more aware, the police too are getting more challenges highly intelligent men are getting involved in crime, and for you to stop them, you must educate yourselves,” the CP cautioned.

CP Etim, also charged the newly promoted officers to make sure the promotion reflect in the way they dressed, comport themselves and also took care of their families, threatening that any officer caught neglecting his family duties will be severely punished.

Speaking further Etim lauded members of press for a cordial relationship, stressing that their support has spurred the command to perform well.
He said, “I wish to thank immensely the contributions of the press in being the 3rd eye, and voice of conscience -appreciating him when he has done right, and informing him when is wrong.”
On his part, Gombe Nigeria Union of Journalists Chairman, Saidu Malala, commended the existing synergy between the police and the media, adding that more of such cooperation would yield the needed development.
