By Abdulmumini Basiru Sharifai
Surrounding gender equality, the focus is often on the challenges faced by women. While it is crucial to address and rectify these inequalities, it is equally important to recognize that life is not always fair for men either. This article aims to shed light on some of the struggles and pressures faced by men in society, emphasising the need for a more comprehensive understanding of gender equality it’s has the following factors see
Societal Expectations of Masculinity:
Men often face immense societal pressure to conform to traditional notions of masculinity. The expectation to be strong, emotionally stoic, and the primary breadwinner can create immense stress and negatively impact their mental health. The limited portrayal of diverse masculinities in media and society further exacerbates the issue.
Mental Health Stigma:
Men face a unique set of challenges when it comes to mental health. Societal expectations discourage men from seeking help or expressing vulnerability, leading
Advantage:- Men often enjoy societal privileges, such as higher pay, better job prospects, and greater political representation.
– Men may face fewer societal expectations and pressures related to physical appearance and reproductive choices.
Men generally have more freedom and opportunities to pursue their career goals and personal aspirations without being limited by traditional gender roles.
Disadvantage: Men can also experience discrimination and inequality, such as in family law and child custody cases, where they may be perceived as less nurturing or capable parents.
– Men may face societal pressure to be tough, stoic, and emotionally restrained, which can impact their mental health and emotional well-being.
– Men have higher rates of suicide and are less likely to seek help for mental health issues due to societal expectations and stigmas.
Cause and Effect:
The perception of life not being fair for men can be attributed to deeply ingrained gender norms and stereotypes that have been perpetuated for centuries. These norms and stereotypes assign certain roles, responsibilities, and expectations to
men based on their gender. This not only puts pressure on men to conform to these expectations but also limits their ability to express themselves fully and seek support when needed.
Problem: Life generally is not fair for the male gender. While discussions on gender inequality often focus on the challenges faced by women, it is important to recognise that men also face their own set of hardships and unfairness in society. Some of the problems faced by men include societal expectations of masculinity, mental health stigma, and discriminatory practices in areas such as family law.
Solution: In order to address the unfairness faced by men, society needs to take certain steps:
Challenging Gender Stereotypes: It is crucial to challenge the rigid gender stereotypes that place expectations on men to be strong, emotionless, and tough. Promoting a more inclusive understanding of masculinity can help create an environment where men feel more comfortable expressing their emotions and seeking support.
Women Breaking the Mental Health Stigma: Society should work towards breaking the stigma surrounding mental health, particularly for men. This can be achieved through awareness campaigns, education, and promoting open discussions about mental well-being.
In conclusion, while discussions surrounding gender equality often focus on the challenges faced by women, it is important to acknowledge that men also face inequalities in society. Societal expectations of masculinity, mental health stigma, and discriminatory practices in areas such as family law all contribute to the challenges faced by men. Achieving true gender equality requires a comprehensive understanding of the struggles faced by both men and women and working towards dismantling the rigid gender norms and stereotypes that perpetuate these inequalities.
