United Nations Childrens Fund alongside Borno State Government, on Monday empowered 4,800 youths with requisite skills.
Our correspondent reports that out of the number, 3200 will be trained in 2024 while the remaining 1600, will be empowered in 2025.
The trainees are to acquire skills in tailoring and fashion design, barbing and hairdressing, welding, aluminum fabrication, among many others.
“Through the funding from the Government of Norway, UNICEF will be supporting Borno State Government through the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation to train 4,800 adolescent/out-of-school youth by 2025,” UNICEF Maiduguri Field Office Chief, Phuong Nguyen, said at the flag-off of the first batch of 1000 trainees in Maiduguri, Monday, March 11.
“Out of this number, 3,200 will be trained this year,” Nguyen explained, saying that the training is conducted under the Safe, Inclusive Learning Skills for All, a project funded by Norway.
Under the three-month training arrangements, “UNICEF plans to provide them with starter packs after the graduation,” Nguyen said, adding, “It is expected that the knowledge and skills to be acquired will encourage them to pursue their education and engage in businesses to build their self-reliance.
She expressed UNICEF’s gratitude to the Borno State Government for partnering with the global agency in promoting basic education, adding, “We are pleased to continue to support the Borno State government’s focus on vocational skills training in line with its agenda for human capital development.”
