Gombe Network of Civil Society on Thursday lauded the election victory of Alhassan Yahya, as President of Nigeria Union of Journalists.
In a press statement issued to PERISCOPE NIGERIA by the Chairman Yusuf Ibrahim, on behalf of the group, its prayed for the success of his tenure.
PERISCOPE NIGERIA reports that Yahya polled 436 to defeat Dele Atunbi, who scored 97 votes and Muhammed Garba, who garnered 39 votes.
Yahya is a season journalist and development worker with interest in child spacing, malnutrition, immunisation among others
Ibrahim’s statement partly read, “I extend our warmest congratulations to you on your remarkable election as the new President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) during the eight Triennial National Delegates Conference held in Owerri, Imo State. Your victory is a clear testament to your dedication, competence, and unwavering commitment to the advancement of journalism and humanity at large.
“GONET, a coalition of civil society organisations in Gombe State, is dedicated to promoting good governance, accountability, and sustainable development. Our vision is to empower communities through advocacy and action, and our mission is to serve as the voice of the voiceless, fostering positive change and inclusive development across Gombe State and Nigeria.”
Continuing Ibrahim added, “Your election as the NUJ President comes at a pivotal time when investigative journalism and people-centered media are critical for achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and driving societal progress. We are confident that under your visionary leadership, the NUJ will continue to champion press freedom, integrity, and development-oriented journalism.”
Ibrahim encouraged the new administration to intensify efforts towards fostering people-oriented development through investigative journalism and promoting policies that advance human rights, transparency, and accountability. The role of the media in ensuring a fair and informed society cannot be overstated, and your leadership offers renewed hope for a stronger and more impactful journalism sector.
“GONET is open to collaborating with the NUJ at both the state and national levels to achieve our shared goals of promoting good governance, civic engagement, and sustainable development.
