The Plateau State Coordinator of the Sustainable Development Goals Project Support Unit, Mrs Nanbam Danjuma, on Sunday said the Plateau State delegation at the recent United Nations General Assembly made a compelling case for women’s economic empowerment because the move remains a key pathway to sustainable development.
In a telephone interview with our correspondent, Danjuma explained that the Plateau delegation, led by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, engaged in a series of strategic sessions focused on advocating for Plateau’s unique developmental needs alongside the broader goals of economic equity and women’s empowerment.
“The recent UNGA meeting was a significant success for us,” Mrs Danjuma said. “Many of our engagements aimed to address systemic barriers to economic sovereignty, especially those impacting African communities.
“At the Africa-America Institute’s session, for instance, leaders explored historical injustices and strategies to build a fairer global economic system through liberatory education and community-building. Economic sovereignty and self-sufficiency are essential if we are to build resilient communities free from dependency on external forces.”
According to her, the advocacy for women’s empowerment was central during the Nigeria Governors’ Spouses Forum stakeholder session, which emphasised economic independence as critical to societal transformation.
“We must equip our women with the tools and opportunities to become economically independent. By fostering women’s self-sufficiency and enhancing their role in decision-making at both the national and local levels, we advance gender equality and empower them towards a sustainable future,” she said.
The Plateau SDGs Coordinator further noted that meetings with international investors were already yielding promising interest in sustainable development opportunities in Plateau State.
She expressed appreciation to Governor Mutfwang for enabling her to contribute to the state’s progress, adding that “With these partnerships, we are positioning Plateau state as a model for sustainable development in Nigeria, paving the way for a brighter and more inclusive future for the state’s citizens.”
