The First Lady of Gombe State, Hajiya Asma’u Yahaya, has taken the sensitisation on gender-based violence to Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State, with the call on stakeholders to unite in tackling the menace.

Yahaya who was represented by Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development Asma’u Iganus, decried the dangers of gbv on women and girls.
The advocacy visit to the LGA was in commemoration of 16 days of activism with the 2024 theme Unite! To end violence against women and girls.

According to Yahaya, the state’s statistics is not cheering, so the need for concerted efforts in combating violence against women and girls.
She said, “Based on available statistics Gombe State is in red. We need to improve on this numbers. We expect that it will improve before next year. We have been to other LGAs and the message is for us to unite to end violence.”
The First Lady while bemoaning the impact of violence, stressed the need for LGAs to effectively implement the already enabling laws.
“We have the laws and we want LGAs to get involved as we end violence. GBV has overwhelming effect on our society, and people,” Yahaya added.

Speaking earlier, Wife of Akko LGA Chairman, Aishatu Muhammad, lauded the first lady for Gombe State Governor for her love for women and girls, assuring that the council will support efforts to ensure their protection.
Muhammad noted that she will work assidiously to support her husband towards queuing with the aspiration of a safer state and where equity thrives.
