The Department of State Services has accused a whistleblower and activist Muhammad Mahdi Shehu of disseminating false information and inciting public disorder, leading to five terrorism-related charges against him.

According to the DSS, Shehu spread doctored videos claiming the Nigerian government had allowed France to establish a military base in Northern Nigeria.

Recall that the Chief Magistrate Court, CMC in Kaduna State on January 2, ordered the detention of activist Mahdi Shehu in prison for making a social media post that revealed Bola Tinubu’s ties with France.

According to the deleted post made by Shehu, Bola Tinubu was pandering to Western interests and planning to establish a French military base in the Northwestern region of the country.

Meanwhile, the information minister Mohammed Idris debunked the claims, labelling them as “baseless” assertions

Also recall that Shehu was granted bail by a Kaduna State High Court, set at N3 million, with the condition that two reputable clerics act as his sureties.

The charges filed at the Federal High Court, Kaduna, include false publication to cause public alarm and dissemination of terrorism-related false information.

Justice Rilwan Aikawa had earlier granted the DSS 60 days to detain Shehu for investigation, invoking the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

Shehu’s bail terms also require him to surrender his passport, seek court approval for travel, and report to the DSS monthly.
