Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, on Saturday harped the importance of preserving cultural heritage for future generations at the 13th Kamo Annual Cultural Festival.
He urged the people of Kamo Community to uphold their customs, values, and traditions, saying “the people of Kamo Community should not relent in upholding their customs, values, and traditions in the interest of the upcoming generation.”
Represented by the Secretary to Government of Gombe State, Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi, the governor highlighted his administration’s commitment to preserving culture and traditions. “We place great emphasis on culture and traditions, hence the inauguration of a committee on museum and monuments,” he explained.
The committee’s primary responsibility is to identify and preserve historical sites and monuments linked to the cultural evolution and experiences of the people. Governor Yahaya also warned citizens to remain vigilant in the face of recent petroleum tanker explosions, advising them to “distance themselves from the scene for safety” in the event of an incident.
Furthermore, the governor stressed the need for unity and peaceful coexistence, encouraging the people of Kamo land to utilize their vast arable land for economic prosperity. He cautioned against the indiscriminate sale of land, emphasizing the importance of responsible land management.
PERISCOPE NIGERIA reports that other dignitaries, including the Chairman of Kaltungo Local Government, Dr. Iliya Suleiman, and the Chairman of Kamo Community Development Association, Dr. Barnabas Malle, also delivered remarks.
They praised the Kamo community’s efforts to preserve their cultural heritage and encouraged them to continue promoting their rich culture.
As Dr Malle noted, “The people of Kamo are peace-loving and mostly farmers. This cultural event is aimed at showcasing the rich culture of Kamo people to the wider world.” The event featured various activities, including a match pass by different groups.”
