From his formative years, the path of Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi has been marked by a steady rise through the ranks of leadership, driven by a passion for service, integrity, and academic excellence. His leadership journey began early, first as Assistant Head Boy at Kalaring Primary School in 1974–1975, and later as Head Prefect at Teachers College Jama’are in Bauchi State between 1979 and 1980. These early roles were signs of the leadership qualities that would continue to define his career.

Between 1976 and 1980, he actively served as Secretary and later President of the National Union of Kaltungo District Students (NUKADS) and the Tangale Waja Students’ Union, showcasing his ability to organise and lead student bodies. His leadership potential was further harnessed during his time at the University of Maiduguri, where he was elected President of the National Association of Physical, Health Education, Sport & Dance (NAPHER-SD) Unimaid Branch and Secretary-General of the National Union of Bauchi State Students (NUBASS) Unimaid Branch from 1983 to 1985.
Professor Njodi’s academic career saw a steady climb. Between 2008 and 2010, he served as Acting Dean of the Faculty of Education at the University of Maiduguri. In 2010, he became the substantive Dean, making history as the first alumnus to lead the faculty. His appointment as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Services) from 2010 to 2014 further underlined his academic leadership prowess, and in 2014 he was appointed Vice Chancellor of the University, a position he held until 2019—becoming the first alumnus to serve in both capacities.
During his tenure as Vice Chancellor, Professor Njodi led a remarkable transformation of the University of Maiduguri, overseeing significant physical development that turned the campus into a hub of architectural innovation. His tenure also prioritized academic excellence, further raising the institution’s profile.
Recognizing his technocratic capacity, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya appointed Professor Njodi as Secretary to the Gombe State Government in 2019. He was reappointed in 2023 and continues to serve with diligence, compassion, and integrity. His influence also extends beyond state boundaries. In 2020, he was appointed the pioneer Chairman of the North-East Secretaries to the State Government (SSGs) Forum. Following Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s appointment as Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NSGF) in 2023, Professor Njodi was unanimously elected Chairman of the SSGs of the 19 Northern States, a role he still holds.
Throughout his distinguished career, Professor Njodi has remained a symbol of transparency, accountability, and excellence. His contributions have earned him numerous accolades from national and international academic and non-academic institutions. His dedication to human capital development has also been recognized by several communities, resulting in the conferment of over 30 traditional titles—an extraordinary testament to a lifetime of impactful service.
