The Court of Appeal has affirmed Senator Monday Okpebholo as the duly elected Governor of Edo State, dismissing the appeal filed by the PDP candidate, Asue Ighodalo.
Beyond the politics, it is essential to examine the policy dynamics of this administration, especially in comparison to that of his predecessor. As James Freeman Clarke once said, “A politician thinks of the next election, while a statesman thinks of the next generation.”

I am not a politician—I’m a policy analyst. Those familiar with my work know that I rarely give out praise lightly. But what draws my respect is pragmatism, speed, and precision. I may not claim to know Nigeria inside out, but I can recognize sincerity and genuine leadership when I see it.
Love him or hate him, Governor Monday Okpebholo stands out. A man of few words and profound action, he embodies the age-old adage: “Actions speak louder than words.”
Quiet Effectiveness Amid Loud Opposition
It is unsurprising that opposition forces have responded with an avalanche of misinformation, seeking to slow him down. But what sets Okpebholo apart is his ability to achieve results without bureaucratic fanfare or endless Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs)—a defining feature of his predecessor, who was widely dubbed “the MOU Governor.”
In just seven months, Okpebholo’s performance has been nothing short of transformational.
Infrastructural Progress
The Governor has flagged off the Benin inner-city bypass from Teboga Road to Ugbowo, reducing congestion on the ever-busy Benin-Lagos Road and boosting local economies. He is also constructing the first flyover in Benin City at Ramat Park, a promise now becoming a reality.
Workers’ Welfare and Civil Service Reform
He has appointed over 460 state-employed cleaners, placing them on a ₦70,000 minimum wage—far above the ₦20,000 they earned under the previous administration through exploitative consultants. The civil service is being restored to its rightful role, functioning effectively and independently.
Judicial Independence
In a move that contrasts sharply with the selective tendencies of the previous administration, Governor Okpebholo swore in three High Court judges—Hon. Justice Maureen Omoruyi-Ojo, Hon. Justice Jeff Okundamayi, and Hon. Justice Edoghoho—who had been neglected for over 84 weeks. At the swearing-in, he declared that in Edo, one need not have a godfather to succeed, only a fear of God.
Education and Transparency
Governor Okpebholo exposed the EdoBEST program as a farce, renovating dilapidated schools through swift interventions previously unheard of. He also reopened access to educational materials, distributing books hoarded by the last administration.
Security and Infrastructure Support
He has equipped security agencies with brand-new Hilux vehicles, over 1,000 motorcycles, and logistics support—contributing to a successful mop-up operation involving over 5,000 weapons. This contrasts with the outdated and insufficient resources provided by the last government.
Media and Digital Access
The Edo Broadcasting Service (EBS) is back on terrestrial TV and live online via platforms like Radio Garden and Radio Planet. The appointment of veteran broadcaster Suleiman Aledeh marks a new era for the institution, with digitalization projects currently underway.
Economic and Cultural Restoration
The Edo Internal Revenue Service now reports double-digit billions in revenue—a first for the state—placing Edo among the most economically viable in Nigeria.
He has also restored the full privileges of the revered Oba of Benin, reversing previous efforts to undermine the monarchy. The Benin Traditional Council now operates with the dignity and authority it deserves.
Human-Centered Governance
He is resolving the controversial demolitions for the “Coral City” project in Obazagbon and Okuoroma communities with empathy and transparency. Federal roads such as the Ekpoma-Auchi Road are being reconstructed by the state, bypassing the blame game of previous administrations.
Rule of Law and Anti-Cultism Drive
Okpebholo has curbed cult-related killings by supporting amendments to the Edo State Anti-Cultism Law and enforcing real consequences for violent crimes—ensuring public safety through action, not just policy.
Healthcare and Public Institutions
He has reclaimed the Edo Specialist Hospital from exploitative consultants, making it accessible to citizens. Plans are underway to revive the historic Central Hospital, shifting focus from vanity projects like the museum to life-saving healthcare services.
Sports and Public Access
Under his leadership, Edo placed 5th in the just-concluded National Sports Festival. The Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium has been reopened to the public, unlike in the previous regime, where it was restricted to elites.
Investigative Governance
Through deep audits and investigations, Governor Okpebholo has uncovered shocking mismanagement from the past administration—laying the groundwork for reforms and a new beginning.
A New Era
He has flagged off road projects across all parts of Edo State, signaling inclusive governance. Intelligence is not in grammar; it is in action. If you’re impressed by rhetoric with no results, then the problem isn’t intelligence—it’s misplaced priorities. Intelligence without impact is a scam.
A new Edo has risen.
