Members of the Gombe State House of Assembly have been urged to intensify efforts in promoting religious harmony and safeguarding human rights across the state.

The call came during a one-day advocacy and technical engagement organised by the TEKAN Peace Desk in collaboration with the Centre for Community Actions for Peace and Development, under the Faith for Peace project. The initiative, co-funded by the European Union and Bread for the World, has been running for over two years across the state’s three senatorial districts.
Coordinator of the TEKAN Peace Desk, Helen Haggai, said the project has reached communities in Kwami, Billiri, and Yamaltu-Deba LGAs, achieving significant milestones, including the production of a policy brief with concrete recommendations for interfaith harmony.
“It’s aimed at fostering interfaith harmony and reducing conflict. The document has already been submitted to the Gombe State House of Assembly for legislative action. We are deeply grateful to our partners for their timely and continued support, which made the smooth implementation of this project possible,” she said.
Haggai also emphasised the importance of gender rights, urging collaborative action to sustain peace in the state.
Chairman of the House Committee on Women Affairs, Gabriel Galadima, stressed the need to monitor religious teachings to prevent the spread of divisive messages. “Their preaching should be scrutinised; some of them preach things capable of causing distrust,” he said.

Speaker of the Assembly, Abubakar Luggerewo, assured that the legislature remains committed to preserving the state’s peace and harmony. “We want to thank TEKAN Peace Desk for their work in Gombe State. They have done well. We will continue to support the state government in ensuring peace and religious tolerance,” he said.
