The Catholic community in Bauchi and Gombe States is mourning the passing of Rev. Father John Keane, a revered priest of the Society of African Missions (SMA), who died on Wednesday in Gombe.
Keane was born on 2nd December 1956.
Fondly remembered for his deep spirituality, humility, and unwavering dedication, Rev. Fr. Keane served for many years in Saint James Catholic Church, Gombe, where his pastoral zeal and commitment to community development touched countless lives.

He was first brought to the Diocese of Bauchi, specifically to Saint James Parish, by the pioneer bishop, the late Most Rev. John Moore from Ireland, under whose guidance he began his missionary service in the region.
Throughout his ministry, Fr. Keane became known as a compassionate shepherd and a pillar of faith who combined evangelism with practical service.

His contributions went beyond the pulpit—helping to build both spiritual and physical foundations for the growth of the Church and fostering peace among people of diverse backgrounds.
Many parishioners and colleagues describe him as a mentor, a man of prayer, and a symbol of dedication who gave his all to the mission of Christ.
His passing, though deeply felt, is seen as a celebration of a life well spent in service to God and humanity.
