An old money-laundering case involving Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has resurfaced amid renewed political activities and growing tensions in the state ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
The case, which dates back to June 2016, involved the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigning Fintiri and Mayim Construction and Properties Limited before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
The EFCC had filed a five-count charge bordering on alleged money laundering involving about ₦2.9 billion.
According to the anti-graft agency, the allegations included transactions involving naira and dollar accounts allegedly linked to Fintiri, a cash payment reportedly connected to the purchase of a property in Maitama, Abuja, and a ₦550 million loan allegedly used to acquire a tea plantation in Taraba State.
Fintiri pleaded not guilty to the charges. He was initially remanded at Kuje Prison pending the determination of his bail application but was later granted bail.
The case, which also attracted renewed public attention in 2025, has now resurfaced online as political activities intensify across Adamawa.
Its re-emergence comes amid increasing exchanges among supporters of rival political camps as politicians and their supporters begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 governorship contest.
There is, however, no indication from the information available that the resurfacing of the 2016 case represents a fresh charge or new legal action against Fintiri.
The renewed focus on the case comes as the political temperature in Adamawa gradually rises ahead of the next governorship election.
