Operatives of the Gombe State Police Command on Monday recovered 66 parcels of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp after intercepting an unregistered vehicle along the Kuri–Deba Road.

The Command said the operation, carried out by officers of the Deba Division around 9:30 p.m. on November 16, followed “credible intelligence” received from surveillance operatives regarding the suspicious movement of unidentified men driving an unregistered ash-coloured Toyota Corolla.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, the Divisional Police Officer immediately mobilised a team to the location upon receiving the information.

He said, “On arrival, our operatives sighted three suspects attempting to deliver the suspected illicit substance to an accomplice on a motorcycle.

“However, on seeing the police team, the suspects abandoned the exhibits and fled the scene.”

He said a search of the area led to the recovery of three bags containing 66 parcels of dried leaves “reasonably suspected to be Indian hemp.” The items have been taken into custody as investigations continue.

Abdullahi disclosed that Commissioner of Police, CP Bello Yahaya, praised the swift response of the officers involved, noting that the operation reflects the Command’s renewed commitment to tackling drug trafficking and other criminal activities in the state.

“This recovery is a testament to our resolve to rid Gombe State of crimes and criminal networks.

“We urge residents to continue providing useful and timely information to support police efforts,” he added.

The Command assured that efforts have been intensified to arrest the fleeing suspects, adding that further updates will be provided as investigations progress.
