A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yaya Tongo, on Tuesday disclosed his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), citing unresolved leadership challenges within the party.

Tongo, who represents Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency of Gombe State, announced that he formally withdrew his membership from the PDP on March 18, 2026.
This was contained in a letter the lawmaker signed obtained by our correspondent.
According to him, the decision was communicated to the party chairman in Tongo Ward, Funakaye Local Government Area.
Speaking on his decision, the lawmaker said the move followed careful consideration of the party’s internal situation, particularly at the national level.
“This decision has not been made lightly, but comes after careful observation of the current state of the party, especially the ongoing leadership crisis at the national level,” he said.
He added that the absence of a stable leadership structure made it difficult for the party to provide the direction and unity needed to move forward effectively.
“As it stands, there is no clear and stable leadership structure capable of providing the direction and unity required to move the party forward,” he stated.
Despite his resignation, Tongo expressed gratitude to the party’s leadership and members in his constituency for their support during his time in the PDP.
“I sincerely appreciate the leaders and members of the PDP in my constituency for the support, trust, and opportunities given to me. I remain grateful for the experiences and cooperation we shared,” he said.
He also prayed for peace and progress in the country.
“I pray that Almighty Allah grants our country lasting peace, unity, and sustainable progress,” he added.
