Politics has often tested the strength of friendships, loyalties, and personal convictions. In Gombe South Senatorial District, the unfolding political drama between Senator Anthony Siyako Yaro and Evangelist Jerry Damara has become one of the most discussed developments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

What started as a celebrated political friendship after the 2023 elections has now evolved into a contest that many political observers, political analysts, believe will redefine the future of Gombe South.

When Senator Anthony Siyako Yaro emerged victorious in the 2023 senatorial election, defeating APC candidate Senator Joshua Lidani with over 97,000 votes, the victory was widely celebrated across the Southern zone. Friends, Political associates, supporters, and family rejoiced with him, including Jerry Damara, who reportedly hosted and celebrated the senator’s triumph in Jos shortly after the election victory promised to support him, and be a strong pillar for the development of Gombe South.

Three years later, the political equation has dramatically changed.
Following Senator Siyako’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in April 2026, many expected the friendship between the two political allies to strengthen under the same political platform. Instead, events took a different turn when Jerry Damara emerged as the APC consensus candidate for Gombe South Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 elections.

The development immediately sparked heated debates across political circles, ethnicity and personality.

For some, Damara’s emergence represents a betrayal of friendship.
Their argument is simple: if political friendship and loyalty truly existed, Jerry should have stepped aside being a friend and evangelist. They point to biblical examples such as Jonathan, son of King Saul, who willingly supported David despite being the natural heir to the throne.
To this group, friendship should rise above personal and primitive ambition.
However, another school of thought strongly disagrees.

They argue that politics is fundamentally about representation, competition, and public interest. According to them, no individual owns a political office, and no friendship should prevent the people from choosing whom they believe can better represent their interests.
To these analysts, Jerry Damara merely exercised his constitutional and democratic right to contest for an office that belongs to the people, not to any individual.
The debate becomes even more interesting when viewed from another political angle.
Several observers believe the entire scenario reflects a broader political strategy allegedly being deployed by the Governor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya leadership of the APC in Gombe State.

According to this perspective, the emergence of relatively new senatorial candidates is part of a deliberate effort to reshape power dynamics within the state’s political structure at the Senate.

Supporters of this theory point to the inability of established political figures such as former Governor and Senator Mohammed Danjuma Goje and Senator Anthony Siyako Yaro to secure their desired political positions within the party structure.

Their argument is that first-time senators are often easier to coordinate politically, thereby strengthening the influence of state political leadership within the National Assembly.
Whether this theory is accurate or not remains open to interpretation, but it has undoubtedly become part of the wider political conversation in Gombe State. Senator Anthony Siyako Yaro entered the Senate in 2023 under the platform of the PDP after defeating incumbent APC structures in Gombe South.

Before politics, he built a distinguished career in banking and financial consultancy, earning recognition for his experience in finance and administration.
Since arriving at the National Assembly, the senator has pursued several empowerment and constituency intervention programmes. Reports indicate that educational grants, youth empowerment programmes, agricultural support schemes, healthcare projects, and entrepreneurship initiatives have been facilitated within the district.
Among projects associated with his representation are scholarship interventions, renovation of primary healthcare centres, youth skill acquisition programmes, procurement of agricultural inputs, and conflict-management initiatives targeted at communities within Gombe South.
Supporters of the senator argue that despite being a first-term legislator, he has demonstrated capacity, maturity, and access to federal opportunities that have benefitted the zone.
They maintain that experience gained over four years in the Senate positions him better to deliver more effectively if given another mandate.
The Emergence of Jerry Damara, on the other hand, represents a new generation of political leadership seeking to establish itself on the larger stage.
His emergence as APC consensus candidate has been interpreted by supporters as a reward for years of loyalty, grassroots mobilization, and political engagement within the party structure.
His supporters believe Gombe South requires fresh energy, innovative thinking, and a new approach to legislative representation.

They argue that political offices should not become permanent possessions and that democracy thrives when new leaders are given opportunities to contribute.
For them, 2027 offers voters an opportunity to evaluate both continuity and change.
What Should Matter to Gombe South?
Beyond friendship and political rivalry lies a more fundamental question:
What does Gombe South truly need?
The district comprises diverse communities with enormous human and natural resources. Yet many residents continue to demand better roads, improved educational opportunities, healthcare infrastructure, industrial development, youth employment, agricultural support, and stronger federal presence.
Political analysts insist that the 2027 election should not merely be about personalities.
Instead, voters must critically assess which candidate possesses:
Legislative competence.
National political connections.
Capacity to attract federal projects.
Educational and administrative experience.
Accessibility to constituents.
Ability to unite the diverse ethnic and religious communities of Gombe South.
A clear development agenda for the district.
The real victory for Gombe South will not come from which politician defeats another.
It will come from electing a representative capable of converting political influence into tangible development.

As things stand, the 2027 senatorial election in Gombe South is shaping up to be one of the most competitive contests in the history of the district.
Several factors will determine the outcome:
Incumbency Advantage: Senator Siyako enters the race with the visibility and influence that come with holding office.
Party Structure: Jerry Damara benefits from the strength of the APC political machinery and the influence of the ruling establishment in Gombe State.
Performance Record: Constituents will assess the achievements and shortcomings of the current senator.
Grassroots Mobilisation: The candidate who connects more effectively with local communities will enjoy a strategic advantage.
Youth Demographics: Young voters increasingly demand results rather than political rhetoric.
Political Sentiment: Public perception regarding fairness, loyalty, competence, and representation could influence voting patterns.
Ultimately, the people of Gombe South remain the final arbiters.
Friendship may shape headlines.
Political calculations may influence party decisions.
But in a democracy, it is the electorate that determines the future.
As 2027 approaches, the critical question is no longer whether friendship was betrayed or political interest prevailed.
The question is whether Gombe South will elect a representative capable of transforming it’s enormous potential into measurement development and a stronger voice within the Nigeria Senate.
The answer as always lies with the people.
