A philanthropist, Chief David Sabo Kente, on Wednesday said pressure from stakeholders within and outside Taraba State compelled him to step aside from the 2027 governorship race.

Kente also said his decision was aimed at allowing political stability and peace, adding that he would soon communicate to his supporters on where to cast their votes.
“I want to inform you here that while I was still consulting, I came under immense pressure from leaders across religious, political, and ethnic divides, both within and outside the state, who are clamouring for the political stability of our dear state and party.
“After due consultation with all relevant stakeholders, especially my political supporters who sacrificed their resources to purchase the Expression of Interest and Nomination forms for me, I want to announce my decision to step aside from the race,” Chief Kente explained.
The APC chieftain also expressed dismay over the ongoing party primaries, saying he fears the 2027 elections in the state may not be free and fair.
“I observed with dismay that the ongoing APC primaries are a clear indication that the 2027 elections may not be free and fair, and I have come to the conclusion that nothing good can possibly come out of them,” he continued.
Kente also said he was not given any money to withdraw from the race.
“Let me emphasise here that no one has ‘settled’ me. My decision is strictly in the interest of political stability, peace, and unity of our party and the entire Taraba State. This is not for any personal gain. Quite the contrary, I have already invested heavily in this project, but I must put the people first; hence, my decision to step aside from the race.
“As you are also aware, His Excellency, Governor Agbu Kefas, my younger brother, visited me here shortly after my arrival in Jalingo and requested that I allow him to complete his remaining four years. I told him to give me time to consult with my supporters and stakeholders. I did not collect a kobo from him or anyone else.
“My decision to join the APC gubernatorial race was anchored on pressure from the people of Taraba State, who felt the present administration has not lived up to their expectations and needed someone to step in and change the situation.
“I call on my teeming supporters to stay calm, remain loyal to our great party, and work for the success of President Bola Tinubu, who has good intentions for our state and the country at large.
“As the days go by, I will be in touch to give clear direction, and I will remain committed to the cause of a greater, better, and more prosperous Taraba and Nigeria at large,” Chief Kente stated.
