The Chairman-elect of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Jalingo Branch, Dr Daniel Philemon Saredau, on Saturday said his administration would prioritise the digitalisation of bar practice to enable the public to access the association’s activities in Taraba State.
Dr Saredau also disclosed that strategic partnerships with government through engagement with critical stakeholders would be key to ensuring that government understands its responsibilities to society and why lawyers must protect public interest issues.
According to the newly elected NBA chairman, his administration intends to leverage technology by creating a branch website and a digital members’ portal through which members can access resources and make payments online, while promoting the rule of law.
“Our desire is to lift the bar,” Saredau emphasised.
The NBA chairman-elect assured that the association would remain committed to human rights advocacy and public interest issues to ensure that social justice causes and access to justice remain at the forefront.
“We want to digitalise bar practice. Our desire is to uplift the welfare of members and promote the rule of law.
“We will create a branch website and make use of technology to improve from where we are to the next level. We hope to establish a digital members’ portal through which members can access their resources and make payments online. Our target is to build a strong online presence so that members of the public can access the activities of the bar,” the chairman-elect stated.
Dr Saredau also expressed his desire to establish strong working relationships among the bar, the bench and security agencies to facilitate the administration of justice.
“Our predecessors have done their best, but we want to create a stronger relationship among the bar, the bench and security agencies, since we are all stakeholders and participants in the criminal justice sector.
“We will create strategic partnerships with government by engaging critical stakeholders to ensure that government understands its responsibilities to society and why lawyers need to protect public interest issues.
“We will engage in open conversations to ensure that meaningful ideas for development are considered,” he continued.
The newly elected NBA chairman also promised to enhance the capacity of the bar centre to serve as a functional workspace for members.
“We have set targets to attract infrastructure development. We plan to build a guest house that will also improve members’ welfare. We want to ensure that lawyers have opportunities for social and recreational activities in addition to their demanding legal work,” Dr Saredau assured.
