The moment you see “Aso Rock” and “coup” in the same sentence, Nigeria holds its breath.

Reports alleging documents that detail plans to attack the Presidency and target senior military chiefs are serious. If true, it means some actors inside and outside the system believe the only way to change power is through force. That is dangerous for everyone, not just Tinubu’s government.

The line: “If Nigerian senior military echelons were to be professional, Tinubu would have been long gone” captures the frustration many Nigerians feel. It’s the voice of people who think the military is political, not professional. Who believe promotions, postings and loyalty are traded instead of merit, constitution and service.

But here’s the hard truth: a professional military is exactly what stops coups, not enables them. Professionalism means the barracks stay in the barracks. It means grievances are handled through elections, courts, protests, and the National Assembly. Messy as they are, not through attacks on Aso Rock.

Nigeria has paid too much for military rule. The economy, institutions, and civic culture are still recovering. An attack on the seat of government would not “reset” things. It would collapse them. Investors flee, regions arm up, and ordinary people in Abuja, Kano, and Edo pay the price.

If there are real documents, they must be investigated transparently. If it’s rumor, it must be debunked fast.

Nigeria doesn’t need another cycle of khaki. We need institutions strong enough that no one, president or plotter, is above the law.
