Gombe Gov lauds Buhari Over Appointment Of Dahiru As Pioneer DG, National Council On Climate Change
Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, on Sunday lauded the President, Muhammadu Buhari, for demonstrating commitment towards getting Nigeria achieve a net zero emission by 2060 in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement which is a legally binding international treaty on Climate Change.

The Governor’s commendation came through a press statement made available by Director General Press Affairs Government House Ismaila Misilli, he lauded Buhari for appointing Dr. Salisu Dahiru, as Pioneer Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Council on Climate Change charged with the responsibility to drive implementation of the Nigeria’s Climate Change Agenda.
He described the appointment of Dahiru as a well deserved one considering his pedigree as a thorough-bred environmental resources management expert, forester, seasoned academic and highly cerebral figure with impeccable footprints in the Climate Change policy drive and implementation at both national and international levels.
According to Yahaya, Dahiru’s role as the pioneer lead of Nigeria’s Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) Programme and as the country’s lead negotiator for the Agriculture, Forest and Other Land Use, AFOLU, sector under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, UNFCCC, remained impactful.
The Governor added that in both assignments, the new DG had distinguished himself and proven his worth, expressing confidence that, “Dahiru will pilot the affairs of the National Climate Change Council considering his experience and remarkable trajectory as the National Project Coordinator for the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project, (NEWMAP) and the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscape (ACReSAL) Project, both financed by the World Bank and both of which Gombe State has since aligned with,” the statement partly read.
While urging the appointee to bring to bear his wealth of experience in the task of developing a carbon market framework and a National Adaptation Plan, Yahaya assured him of the support, solidarity and partnership of the Government and good people of Gombe state as he takes on the new task.
The statement added, “which will be in line with the aspirations of the country’s Nationally Determined Contributions NDC.”
