The National Population Commission (NPC), has urged residents of Gombe State to take advantage of the free birth registration process, revealing that 191,222 children were registered in 2021.

Addressing Journalists in Gombe on Thursday, the Chairman, Nasir Kwarra, while commemorating this year’s Africa civil and vital statistics (CVRS), with the theme ‘Harnessing coordination, country leadership and ownership to strengthen civil registration and vital statistics systems: A vehicle for #countingeveryone’, stressing that it represents 76 percent.

Represented by the Federal Commissioner Abubakar Danburam, Kwarra said the purpose of the celebration was to increase public awareness on the importance of timely registration of vital events, “particularly births and deaths, through well-functioning civil registration systems.

He said the CRVS day would provide an opportunity for a reflection on the legal identity from birth to death of all persons and the realisation of key human and civil rights.

Kwarra said, “Birth registration is free and anybody above 18 years you are entitled to have attestation. We want the populace of Gombe State to know the importance of birth registration, they should register their children from birth and death that is the essence of this celebration.

“They should work towards registering, our locations are across the 11 Local Government Areas. Attestation is just N2,000 for someone above 18 years of age.”

According to Kwarra, civil rights would be strengthened with efficient and effective registration and vital statistics system, promising that it should be inclusive, permanent, continuous, compulsory and confidential.

“The theme speaks to the imperative of a strong institutional and effective leadership and strategies to emphasise our coordination efforts and the extent to which we have taken the leadership in strengthening not only integration with all other sectors, but our plans to have a transformed integrated and digitalized civil registration and vital statistics systems in the improvement of data for effective policy formulation, decision making and good governance. In doing so conscious effort should be made to ensure that the Civil Registration and Vital Registration System enjoys a broad-based support that leverages the development in information technology which supports a future where it will have an integrated effect on future censuses especially in our country Nigeria.

“The National Population Commission which has the statutory mandate to establish a universal and compulsory system of registration of vital events in the country has not rested on its oars in providing leadership for the performance of this responsibility. From its humble beginning of manual registration, the Commission has carefully navigated initial teething challenges and is at the thick of an effective transformation from manual to wholly digitisation and automation of the CRVS system in Nigeria,” Kwara added.

Also speaking, State Director of NPC Jude Maigari noted that the 191,222 birth registered in 2021 represents 76 percent.

He said, “2010 we had 41 percent, in 2020 we had about 65 percent because of the Covid-19 and 2021 we had 76 percent total number of registered children.”
